Beer Review: Pyramid Breweries Audacious Apricot Ale

Wheat ales are delicious and refreshing.  I especially like them on hot, sunny days.  We haven’t had too many of those lately in the heartland.  We’ve begun the transition into winter with several days of rain and gloom.  One of the few things that lift my spirits this time of year (besides football) are the flavors of Fall and the holidays:  pumpkin and spice.  Naturally, I’ve had a taste for a pumpkin ale.   When my local beer market didn’t have any in stock,  I was drawn to the pumpkin orange colored label of  Audacious Apricot Wheat Ale.

Wheat Ales are all the rage right now.  The Anheuser-Busch company even has one now:  Bud Light Golden Wheat (eeeww).  I first fell for wheat ales a few years back when I experienced Walleye Wheat at local brewery, and then went on a wheat ale kick.   A couple of my favorites are Tommy Knocker Jack Whacker Wheat Ale, and Blue Moon Belgian White, and I reviewed both in the spring of 2000.  These beers appeal to even the most limited beer palette.

Audacious Apricot Ale (AAA) has all the qualities of the  best wheat ales,  but has a mellow apricot flavor that tastes damn good.  Apricot is perfect for beer.  Its not too sweet, and a bit tangy with an appealing nose.  Combined with the zest of a wheat ale, the apricot in AAA is truly refreshing.

It’s hard to do anything but rave about this beer.  The only drawback to AAA might be that it goes down too easily.  At 5.1% ABV you could find yourself on the wrong side of sober really quickly.   For best results, load up your fridge with plenty of  Audacious Apricot Ale, get comfortable in your favorite chair, and watch some football.  You’ll be especially comforted by this beer if your team stinks.  By halftime, you’ll think you’re watching the 1999 Rams, not the sorry 2009 version.
