Beer Review: Breakfast Stout Double Chocolate Coffee Oatmeal Stout
If you’re looking from a break in your routine and you’re tired of coffee with breakfast, have we got a beer for you! Founders Brewing Breakfast Stout is the breakfast of champions. This is a full bodied beer made with all of your favorite breakfast ingredients including oatmeal, coffee and chocolate.
If I served Breakfast Stout in a coffee cup, you might believe I was serving you a large espresso. Breakfast Stout looks like coffee and has a thin cinnamon colored head that looks like the foam that mimics the aforementioned espresso. “Looks like coffee” might be an understatement. This beer is black. In a tall glass held up to the light none passed. It was completely opaque.
Breakfast Stout has a smooth, velvety texture like a cross between a cup of coffee and a cup of hot cocoa. I really enjoyed letting it roll over my tongue and coat my palate. It is not thick or heavy. It has the viscosity of water but it has a comfortable feeling that is hard to describe.
Although Breakfast Stout feels like coffee and cocoa, the java flavors are subtle. The chocolate defines its bouquet making this beer a delightful experience. Don’t plan on making this beer your every day brew, and it probably shouldn’t be your party beer either. Like most stouts this beer is filling, however it won’t weigh you down. Still, drinking more than one in a sitting is challenging. I suggest you serve this for desert after a fine meal just as you would a cup of coffee. Enjoy it; savor it; share it with a friend and some good conversation.
There is only one bit of bad news about this beer. It is only available September through December. I’m not quite sure why it is a seasonal beer. Its the only thing disappointing about Breakfast Stout.
Can I heat it up in the microwave, slather on some butter and brown sugar and eat it with a spoon like the kid of the label?
You should put it in a large sauce pan, and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat, and let simmer for about three hours. This should thicken it up. Add butter and brown sugar to taste. Note: depending on thickness, three to four beers are required per serving.
Hi Everyone,
On a serious note, it has been confirmed that Breakfast Stout does contain caffeine. According to the director of operations for Founders Breweries, Breakfast Stout does contain about 15 mg of caffeine.
This is very little compared to coffee (30 – 140 mg caffeine per serving), and less than a caffeinated soda (20 – 26 mg per 6 – 7 oz.). It is more consistent with a cup of hot cocoa which has 10 – 15 mg per 6 – 7 oz serving. Consider that there is 12 oz in a bottle of beer, Breakfast Stout has around 7 mg per 6 oz.
The information above comes from Wilkipedia and http://www.talkaboutcoffee.com/how_much_is_too_much2.html.

hmmm… this got my attention? from the comments and the article above, “Breakfast Stout” seems to be good. Will try this one someday..
I have the pleasure of enjoying a founders breakfast stout right now and wanted to know more about it so I looked up some info. This beer is delicious and refreshingly different, anyone who likes unique beers should give this one a try!
I enjoy drinking stout beers such as Guinness or Warsteiner Dunkel so I bought a single bottle of Breakfast Stout about a month ago to try. I decided to enjoy it tonight…ITS DELICIOUS! But upon tasting its amazingly rich and full chocolate and java flavors I decided I better check out how much caffeine it has… so I know how late I will be up tonight! I am very sensitive to caffeine, but a cup of hot cocoa is usually not enough to keep me up. Thank you for the post above, and I look forward to enjoying this beer more often: I am going to buy a multi-pack next time I head to the store! This is a great beer for anyone who enjoys stout beer, coffee and chocolate flavors. It would be great with dessert, especially something with apples and cinnamon or chocolate! I think I will try it hot as well! I fear I will be craving this beer at least one week out of every month (chocolate and coffee) and likely even more! This is a new favorite!
