Beer Review: Tröegs Nugget Nectar

Troegs Imperial Amber Nugget Nectar

Not for the faint of heart, Tröegs Nugget Nectar is for the true hops lover.  If you like your beer sweet, run, don’t walk, away from this beer as quickly as possible.  However, if you are a true hophead, Tröegs Nugget Nectar is the beer for you.

Always the beer adventurer, I stumbled across the last six pack of Tröegs Nugget Nectar at my local beer temple. It was the last one on the shelf.  “Lucky me,” I thought to myself.  Very lucky me it turned out.  Tröegs Nugget Nectar is only available January through March.

The “nugget” in Tröegs Nugget Nectar refers to the hops.  I recently became more interested in different types of hops after having a Sam Adams Noble Pils.  Even though I found Noble Pils to be less than extraordinary considering its price,  I want to learn more about hops.  Tröegs Nugget Nectar is loaded with them, and the best way to learn about hops is to taste them.

Tröegs Nugget Nectar contains five types of hops  Nugget, Warrior, Tomahawk, Simcoe, and Palisade.  None of these are Noble, but they are delicious.  The Noble hops are known for their mildness and lack of bitterness.  These hops are the Noble hops antithesis.

Tröegs Nugget Nectar comes in around 93 IBUs.  Not the most bitter beer ever, but enough to offend the average beer drinker.   This is not the gateway to craft beers for your beer ignorant friends.   Noble Pils might be a better beer for that.  Tröegs Nugget Nectar, though, is rich in flavor and has a very pleasant aftertaste that will linger for several minutes if your palate is left undisturbed.    Here are the technical details:

Alcohol by Volume: 7.5%
Hop Bitterness (IBU’s): 93ish
Color (SRM): Straw/ Orange
Availability: January – March
Malts: Pilsner, Vienna, Munich
Hops: Nugget, Warrior, Tomahawk, Simcoe, Palisade
HopBack Hops: Whole leaf Nugget
Dry Hops: Nugget, Warrior
Yeast: Ale

Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until 2011 before you can taste some yourself.  You can get the flavor of the Nugget hops in Tröegs HopBack Amber Ale.  However, at 55 IBUs, it must taste like sugar water compared to Nugget Nectar
