Review
I have a friend who hates Tom Petty because he's ugly and has a whiny nasally voice. At one time I agreed with him. I also thought that Tom Petty was a redneck southern rocker. His 1985 album Southern Accents, and especially the song Rebels, confirmed that notion. However, through the years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have proved that their talent outweighs the superficial judgment of even the most musically ignorant. Anthology Through the Years is the ultimate collection of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The 2 CD set includes 34 of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tunes including a new recording, Surrender, written in 1977. It has most of the cuts you'll recognize from the radio and several album only tracks. Anthology is an encyclopedia of American pop rock assembled over 2 and 1/2 decades. There are examples of cool rock, blues rock, guitar rock, southern rock, rock ballads, and pure rock and roll. Petty uses rock and roll to chastise lovers, beg for forgiveness, tell stories, boast of exploits, and examine life's meaning. His styles are so diverse, Anthology could be labeled a various artists compilation. Anthology
is a must add to your rock and roll collection. It's a best in class and
that rates it a 4, but its durability pushes it up to 5 BB & B's.
If you don't recognize the value of this CD, wake up!
